Advanced Techniques for Cutting and Finishing Countertops
After discussing aligning wall cabinets, it's time to focus on the heart of any kitchen: the worktop. The process of preparing it is a combination of precision and craftsmanship.
Preparation and Measurement
Before any cutting, the countertop must acclimate for 48 hours in the space where it will be installed. Humidity and temperature can slightly affect the dimensions of solid wood or laminated plywood. We use masking tape to protect the finished surface during measurements.
Cutting for the Sink
This is the most delicate operation. It starts from the template provided by the sink manufacturer. After tracing the outline, pilot holes are first drilled in the corners to prevent the wood from cracking. The actual cutting is done with a precision circular saw, with a special blade for a clean cut.
Edge Finishing
After cutting, the remaining visible edges (especially the front ones) are finished. For laminated countertops, we apply special edge banding, sealed with a heat gun. For solid wood, we use progressive sanding and application of oil or varnish, ensuring perfect integration with the rest of the surface.
The Installer's Tip: Always keep the fine sawdust from sanding. This, mixed with a quick-drying adhesive, can become an excellent filler for covering any tiny imperfections at joints.
